Pay or Die is based on a true story. Not nearly as good as Little Caesar but there are some great scenes (at least to a young kid first learning about the mob in New York). They used to play it on Million Dollar Movie 5 nights a week when I was 7 or 8 or so. Really was my first taste of organized crime. I lived in Little Italy for 3 years before I realized the plaque on a little triangular park two blocks from my house was Lt. Petrocelli Square (the guy Borgnine played in the movie--first Italian-American cop who fought the mob).
I'm not sure you can find it, but it is worth a look-see.

GREAT movie ... "Oh, mother of mercy ..."
Bill, did you ever see "Pay or Die"? Ernest Borgnine.
Watched this a couple of months ago. Really good.
Haven't seen PAY OR DIE. Probably need to.

I never recognized Borgnine as an Italian name! Originally Borgnino, apparently.
I always found it a bit clunky, especially compared to Burnett's fast-paced and unpredictable book.
