Another Great Idea of Our Time

Oscars doubling best-picture nominees to 10: "The Academy Awards are doubling the number of best-picture nominees from five to 10.

Academy President Sid Ganis said at a news conference that the academy's board of governors made the decision to expand the slate. Ganis said the decision will open the field up to more worthy films for the top prize at Hollywood's biggest party."

Spread the votes, increase the controversy, people who try to see all the nominees will spend more money at the box office. Gee, I wonder why they are doing this?

I had the same reaction, a stunt to try and counter sagging box office revenues and DVD sales. I guess this means the Academy Awards broadcast will be even longer!

This is known as increasing the chance that the crap that the major studios make will actually get nominated for something. There is a reason that all those artsy films get nominated and win and that is that, for the most part, Hollywood makes movies for teenage boys - and not particularly bright teenage boys at that.
