Texas Continues to Lead (Update)

Perry fires up anti-tax crowd: "'There's a lot of different scenarios,' [Governor Rick] Perry said. 'We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot.'

He said when Texas entered the union in 1845 it was with the understanding it could pull out. However, according to the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, Texas negotiated the power to divide into four additional states at some point if it wanted to but not the right to secede.

Texas did secede in 1861, but the North's victory in the Civil War put an end to that."

Bill, We welcome you in New York if you don't want to secede with the other Texans.

NY would get me and Texas would get Rush. A fair trade?

I just watched famous Texas journalist and Bush scourge James Moore responding to Perry whom he referred to as "hirsute" for that six hundred dollar haircut of his. Moore was angry. He said that he's proud to be a Texan and gets tired of the image too many people have of the state as being (paraphrase) s being filled with dumb hicks. He talked about the great writers and artists who have come from Texas and all the ways Texas has led the country in technology. He said it suffers from a lightweight like Perry who's willing to risk "dangerous" talk about seceding just to fire up the far-right base he'll need in the primary. I'd never really watched Perry before today but he sure looks like a pretty boy and empty suit to me. I'm not a fan of Kay Bailey Hutchinson but I hope she kicks his ass in the primary. Moore thinks she will.

Molly Ivins used to call Perry "Governor Goodhair."

While they do not have the right to do this outright, there are certain paths they can take to get this goal. Come on, you know this is possible because this is the same country which gives exceptions to tax cheats through cleaver legal
maneuvers.

Really it is just using the legal system creatively.

Texas probably has the best chance at success. Here is just one way how it can work. The annexation agreement made when Texas joined the union provided that Texas would be able to divide into 5 states. This would create 8 more conservative Senators.

If Texas were to try to divide and be rebuffed, the US would be in violation of the agreement and Texas should be able to go free.

It is not all that far fetched. More here:

I'm tired of these gasbag right-wingers who keep threatening to secede from the U.S., dump tea in the harbor, etc. Go ahead, do it, see what happens. The Republic of Texas lasted only ten years, before Sam Houston and other pragmatists conceded that it couldn't last on its own against Mexico and the Comanches. The drug cartels would snap up an "independent" Texas in no time.

I was under the impression that any sovereignty-related privileges Texas might have had when it first joined the Union were mooted when the state re-joined the Union after the Civil War.

Bill has always said Perry is way worse than W. ever was.

I agree with Ed about Kay Bailey Hutchinson kicking his frat boy butt.

Besides, there is a small chance the Democrats could win her Senate seat.

PS - Bill for Rush? I think any New Yorker would take that trade in a heartbeat.

You're right, Earl. I think the gov skipped that part of his history text.

Aren't these the same folks who got in a snit over Alec Baldwin (or whatever actor it was) threatening to move to Canada when Bush Jr was elected?

Go ahead and break up Texas. Alvin could be it's own state, put Crider in the Governor's seat.
