Bigfoot risks extinction, says Canadian MP - Yahoo! News: "Bigfoot, the legendary hairy man-like beast said to roam the wildernesses of North America, is not shy, merely so rare it risks extinction and should be protected as an endangered species.
So says Canadian MP Mike Lake who has called for Bigfoot to be protected under Canada's species at risk act, alongside Whooping Cranes, Blue Whales, and Red Mulberry trees.
'The debate over their (Bigfoot's) existence is moot in the circumstance of their tenuous hold on merely existing,' reads a petition presented by Lake to parliament in March and due to be discussed next week.
'Therefore, the petitioners request the House of Commons to establish immediate, comprehensive legislation to affect immediate protection of Bigfoot,' says the petition signed by almost 500 of Lake's constituents in Edmonton, Alberta.
A similar appeal has been made to the US Congress."

You can take away my right to hunt Bigfoots when you pry my gun from my cold dead hands.
And I thought our legislature was stupid. Protecting Bigfoot makes as much sense as protecting Paris Hilton's integrity--you can't prove the existence of either one.
Well you have to understand the political culture that Mike Lake is coming from. He's an Alberta Conservative which means that his real political roots are in the old Reform Party of Canada. That was a very "vox populi vox dei" group that used to advocate polling their constituents on most pieces of legislation. It was actually party policy to poll their constituents on most issues and vote based on what the majority supported - a policy that last until the first member voted against the party line because their constituents didn't want it. Still some elements of this remains. Lake - who doesn't believe in Bigfoot - got a petition from one of his constituents with 500 signatures on it he offered it before the House of Commons. "You don't make judgment calls on petitions. We try to do it as a service to constituents." In other words "I might need this guys vote next election so I'd better humour him."
Cap'n Bob is just kidding about Paris Hilton.
