Only read a couple of these. In my misspent youth I uses to hang around the Creem House and got to hear Lester Banks rant. He died to soon.

Recognizing that this list was specifically not about individual bands, I would suggest some other books (which may be a bit more '60s oriented):

Greil Marcus, Mystery Train
Greil Marcus, Lipstick Traces (one of my favorite books ever)
