I think the Lindbergh kidnapping forever changed people's thinking about child safety.

Psahw! They include art heists but leave of the Green River Killer, The Hillside Strangler,Perry and Hickock (In Cold Blood), the Zodiac Killer, and the ascent of L. Ron Hubbard's international con game. How about Leopold and Loeb? Charles Whitman? The Texas Tower sniper?

You'd think that with the movie out now, Zodiac would have been a cinch for the list.

I'm not entirely sure I'd list Piltdown Man as a crime. It was a hoax, but there was no effort on the part of the hoaxer to profit from it.

And if you want another Hollywood crime, how about the murder of William Desmond Taylor. Was it his black valet who may have also been his homosexual lover? Was it silent film comedian and tubercular drug addict Mabel Normand, who may have been his straight lover? Or was it adolescent star Mary Miles Minter who's night gown was supposedly found in his home and whose letters indicated that they'd gotten together well before she reached the age of consent? Or maybe it was her outraged mother?
