The Life of a Song: ‘Not Fade Away’

In 1964, I had never heard Buddy Holly's version, did not know the song at all. Thus, my introduction to the song and the Stones came at the same time, their appearance on THE HOLLYWOOD PALACE, a weekly Saturday night variety show on ABC. On March 7, Dean Martin was the guest host. He did his drunk act (which I rarely found amusing) in introducing the Stones, saying, "I once got rolled when I was stoned." The song I remember them doing was "Not Fade Away."

I miss the old days.

It seems like Buddy Holly's songs travel well. The Stones did that terrific version of "Not Fade Away", the Beatles did one of "Words Of Love" (available on either Anthology or Live at the BBC, I forget which), and John Mellencamp had a great version of "Rave On".
