I enjoyed reading that: a pretty comprehensive overview of the "crime novel" and its sub genres; and I liked his emphasis on meeting reader expectations while still finding a way to surprise.
I thought it was very well done.
I said recently at Steve's site that we read a mystery to see things come together; we read a caper novel to watch things fall apart.
