I think the article needed to clarify that it was referring to sequels (and that's a bit of a loose term in the context of the article; pastiche might be a better one) not written by the original author.
Actually, Grendel is close to a masterpiece. And to call it a sequel is not quite right; it's more (I think) of a retelling of the original from Grendel's point of view. And, as (I suspect) none of us has read Beowulf in the original...
I've read GRENDEL, and you're right. It's a retelling. I took a course in Old English, and at the end of the semester we were reading BEOWULF in the original. We did only a few pages, but if I'd taken another semester, I would have had to read it all. I didn't take another semester.
