A "by the way" - William White, who usually wrote and edited under the name "Anthony Boucher," also used the pseudonyms "H. H. Holmes" and "Herman Mudgett." I suppose that naming someone who wrote frequent reviews after a serial killer must seem appropriate to authors.
Or Robert Bloch's writing about Mudgett/Holmes...from a few decades earlier. The novel AMERICAN GOTHIC and a long historical essay he published as a follow-up.
Boucher signed "Mudgett" to his filler light verse in THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION. He most often used the holmes name for his reviews in the NEW YORK HERALD-TRIBUNE while also conducting a column in the NEW YORK TIMES as Boucher.

You would certainly know them if you'd read Erik Larsen's DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY.
