Fun fact: Claudette Colbert always believed that the left side of her face was her "best" side and, once she had enough clout, she insisted on all her shots being done from her left (so much so that cameramen referred to her as "the fretting frog"). It's sorta like knowing how camera angles and setup shots were used to disguise how short Alan Ladd was: once you know about it, you can't unsee it. And I see Miss Colbert is true to form here--left side front-and-center.
I just finished reading DESIGN FOR DYING by "Renee Patrick," and there's a little in-joke about this. Probably one the few I got, but the book is great fun no matter how many you get or miss.
You must have read an advanced copy. I just went to put on hold on that book and I see the pub date is April of this year. I'll have to wait for it to be available on the i-l-l system.
Deb, I did read an ARC. One of the benefits of being a powerful blogger and reviewer.
Jeff, I remember her from that one, too. I think Ma & Pa stole the film and thus went on to stardom. I saw all those movies when I was a kid, but they weren't the same after Percy Kilbride left the series.
Claudette Colbert also was in a couple of films I really enjoyed. One is MIDNIGHT (script co-written Billy Wilder) though John Barrymore just about steals the show. The original IMITATION OF LIFE is quite good also; I'm certain there are many more roles...

THE EGG AND I is based on a very good (and very funny) book by Betty Macdonald. She created the children's series MRS PIGGLE-WIGGLE. Ma and Pa Kettle are in the book, and really did exist!
My late wife loved the Miss Piggle-Wiggle books when she was a child and often mentioned them. I don't think she remembered Ma and Pa being in them, though. Or if she did, she didn't say.

I remember her from "The Egg & I", a early Ma & Paw Kettle film. I got about a ten DVD set of those movies, they are a hoote.
