Why Kim Kardashian Can’t Write Good

The Daily Beast: Essay-level writing as a basic skill is no longer the norm. Speaking is, however, and that style has influenced our writing. Get over it, grammarians.

There is a new form of English. I'd call it the New English. More and more netizens are using it each day and it has horribly bad grammar. This blog post just reminded me of it.

Yesterday I read a blog post about mothers on Jezebel. Each writer wrote a paragraph or so about her mother and every single one of them used "I" as the object of a preposition (as in "She was a great mother to my siblings and I"). These are not random people posting things in the comment section, these are ( presumably) people who are making a living at least in part by writing--and yet they fail at the most rudimentary aspects of grammar.

/Harrumph!

Being an old guy, and an old English teacher at that, I grew up in the days when grammar was still taught the old-fashioned way, with sentence diagramming and all the trimmings. I was also a reader, and I think the point the author made in the essay about people who don't read is a good one. In fact, I think he's right pretty much down the line. We're in a transitional period, and before long "between he and I" will be standard English. And in case I haven't mentioned it before, I miss the old days.

Excuse me, but this incorrect, ungrammatical "new English" is lazy, ignorant BULLSHIT. This isn't a matter of missing the old days, it's a matter of under-educating, letting students get away with wrong usage and accepting mistakes from grown-ups who speak badly.

I really hate it.

And they make "grammarians" sound like some evil group. BAH.

I just read Mary Norris's book BETWEEN YOU & ME, which makes exactly the same point.

Also, she (and Ms. Hilton) didn't go to college, probably barely made it through high school, isn't a reader and - clearly, I think - just doesn't give a sh!t about any of this.

But she is a product of today.

As Brian Wilson put it, "I guess I just wasn't made for these times."

And keep off our damned lawns!

I sent the article to another friend who wrote, "I thought she couldn't write well because she's stupid," a valid point.

Will the persecution never end?
