The Old Retired English Teacher Sighs and Pulls out the Remainder of His Hair

Patriots Respond To Wells Report With Extensive Document: "The conclusions of the Wells Report are, at best, incomplete, incorrect and lack context.

Above is the first sentence of the Patriots' response to the Wells report.  Who writes this stuff?  I'm not just talking about the missing Oxford comma.  Doesn't anybody teach parallelism anymore?  Or did whoever wrote this just skip his freshman English class?  And keep off my damn' lawn.

I know I shouldn't let things like that bother me, but they make me crazy, especially in a document that's supposed to be at least somewhat important. And especially in the first sentence.

Bill, you have to remember these are Football Players, and they must not be judged by the same standards as those of us who once read a book.

If you read Mary Norris' BETWEEN YOU & ME you'll find she dislikes "Oxford comma" and prefers "serial comma" instead.

Either way, it's football. You expect grammar?

Yes, but the person who wrote that sentence is not a football player, he's an attorney.

Attorneys may be somewhat less literate than football players, given their tendency to write in that arcane argot they use. I had a discussion of this once with an attorney, my point being that precision of speech shouldn't get in the way of clarity.
