Here's another for you: When the film previewed before release, audience members walked out in droves! Daryl Zanuck, head of 20th/Fox, was at the theater when it happened, and commented, "What the @#%&! does a preview audience in Pasadena know about movies? I know about movies, and this is a good movie!"
I love Steinbeck, and my adorned guest room is called "The Steinbeck Room." Living just north of Steinbeck country, I love going to the Museum in Salinas, and the tribute we have at my old alma matte, SJSU. He wrote so simply yet elegantly, and will always be one of the great story tellers about life of all time. As always though, a man ahead of his time.

Well, he was right.
That last scene is shocking even by today's standards.
I mean the scene in the book!
A little too shocking for the movie version, all right.
