Texas really did lead the way--even if it was just a case of petty political revenge on the governor's part. I'd like to read more about Ma Ferguson too. Wasn't that Dean Martin-Susan Hayward movie "Ada" a bit of a roman-a-clef about her?
Haven't seen the movie or read the novel. My father was named Billy Sunday Crider for the famous evangelist. When Sunday supported Ma Ferguson for governor, my grandfather went to the courthouse and had my father's name legally changed to Billy Crider. Well, that's the family story, anyway. Ma and Pa were two of the most corrupt governors in Texas history, which is saying a lot.
