I knew a lot of these. I knew about Saturn's rings, that gluten for most people were harmless, that cracking your knuckles does not cause arthritis. I long suspected that MSG was not as dangerous as some would have you believe.
I think that one came from confusing houseflies with fruit flies. Meanwhile, I not only didn't believe any of these at least as stated, I'm surprised that anyone, for example, thinks the Sun is likely to simply explode after a certain amount of time. (As an example, I never thought tires were what kept a car from electrocuting its occupants when hit by lightning, but I wasn't sure what exactly might be the grounding mechanism, and still am not.)(Yes, it says The Frame.)
I'd learned along ago that most of these were false, but not the one about flies. And now I know that fruit flies can stay around even longer than houseflies. Darn.

I did think flys lived for 24 hours though.
I believed the same and was depressed to learn I was wrong.

And it turns out that if adult fruit flies don't get too cold or too anything else, they can live for 30-45 days according to several web sources.
