It's interesting that Newman seems to remember the movie versions more than the original novels. I haven't seen "The Shining" or "The Haunting", but I read the original novel by King and Jackson. (I've also read the M.R. James story.)
The people who makes these lists always seem to remember the movies better than the novels. I like the title of the James story better than I like the story, to tell the truth.
Not me, man. The best stories still outshine even the good adaptations. Part of the reason I recently gave away copies of THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE and PSYCHO (the novels are better, even if the first films are good), and the likes of Bloch's "Final Performance" and Blackwood's "Running Wolf" trump any adaptation possible (again, a decent AH PRESENTS: for the first)...CONJURE WIFE got one good try and two rather off-point ones, but likewise...
However, HELL HOUSE being the weakest Matheson novel I've tried, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE was a slight improvement. STIR OF ECHOES, while a good film, not an improvement on the articly-titled novel...

I like the story but I think M.R. James did better stories.

I love Psycho, Conjure Wife, and The Haunting of Hill House. Three of my favorites.

Have owned STIR OF ECHOES for many years but have never read it.
