Granted it’s fashionable to smirk over Michael Avallone, but for his fans I would point out that this is one of Mike’s best books, written as a “mainstream breakout” novel in the 1950s. After years of rejection, Mike relented and let it go to Midwood. The later Midwoods were written for Midwood, but this one is set apart. A similar fate awaited AND SEX WALKS IN and THE DOCTOR’S WIFE, both published as “adult novels” in the ‘60s but written much earlier as “serious novels.” Avallone will always be Avallone, but these three deserve to be considered somewhat apart.

Thanks for that info, Steve. Good stuff, and I didn't know it.
