I agree with all this. I was talking recently with a very good writer who's had crime novels published previously. She had a slog this time finding a publisher. She's finally found a well known small press with a good reputation. There will be no advance and very little sales push behind the book. Also it will take a while to see the light of day. Everything she said convinced me to continue having my own crime novels published by my publishing company. The only negative I can see compared to my writer friends situation is the moderate initial money outlay I have to make. Everything else I feel is a positive.
