Whatever they think should have won, the contention that ROCKY winning was a huge shock is wrong. As far as I remember all the sentiment was in that direction at the time, and once the director won there was little doubt. Also, the idea that TAXI DRIVER, NETOWRK and ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN are "three of the greatest movies of all time" is one I'd challenge.

In fact, now that I've read the rest of it the tone is basically that of someone looking back andf saying (with hindsight) "I can't believe X beat Y" rather than what was actually an upset at the time.

CHARIOTS OF FIRE winning was an upset in the way ROCKY wasn't.

Judy Garland losing to Grace Kelly was an upset, though the piece doesn't even mention that in talking about Gwynnie's supposed upset win over Cate Blanchett.

And "Greatest Show On Earth" beating just about anything has to be a great upset. The fact that it beat both "High Noon" and "The Quiet Man" makes it the biggest upset ever...or at least the greatest travesty ever.
