Just heartbreaking. From personal experience, I can assure you that any donation to a reputable charity--especially the Red Cross--will help tremendously.
Those of us who've been through Katrina and Ike, even if we were pretty much unscathed, know a little about what the victims of Sandy are going through. I've given to the Red Cross each time, and I hope that was the best way.
