Dr. Benton sounds like an excellent math guru to have access to 8-) I have a math degree and some actual math work background in statistics / medical research. I know something about most, but not all, of the listed items. Neat list.
BTW, an interesting book about Perelman, the Poincare Conjecture proof and the Fields Medal award controversy is "Perfect Rigor ..." by Masha Gessen. Math knowledge not necessary to understand the book.
