Movies like many other things (politics, religion, science, etc.) change over time for many reasons, most of which are not known until well after the fact. Did these movies, regardless of how one perceives the movies' content, actually change perceptions of race or did they reflect changes that had already occurred in the people that saw them? I'm inclined to the latter hypothesis.
