Anne McCaffrey, R. I. P.

Anne McCaffrey Has Died - GalleyCat: Fantasy novelist Anne McCaffrey has passed away. She was 85 years old. GalleyCat confirmed the sad news with Random House this afternoon.

McCaffrey’s career began with Restoree in 1967. She went on to earn a dedicated following for her beloved series, Dragonriders of Pern. At her website, McCaffrey answered letters from dedicated fans through November.

Her sf/fantasy pro career began with "Freedom of the Race" in SCIENCE FICTION PLUS, one of the few "discoveries" Gernsback and Moskowitz could claim for that magazine, and kicked into gear with "The Ship Who Sang" (F&SF, April '61).

It was a bit of a gap, as well...SF+ story was published in '53.

Not reading this yesterday, I just learned of it. She was an author I really liked and respected,not having met her but through her work. I suppose her son Todd will try to continue the Pern series, but his efforts so far in that regard have been mediocre at best.

I started a survey of all her Pern books on my blog, but only got through about 6 of the books before I ran out of steam. Perhaps this would b a good time to pick that up.
