I have not read the novel as yet but I have been reading James Gould Cozzens, a fine writer I somehow missed until this year. His novels were usually highly praised by critics but had relatively weak sales. GUARD OF HONOR won a Pulitzer in 1948 and sold a bit better.
BY LOVE POSSESSED was his one major bestseller--on the NY Times list for 34 weeks.
Reading Matthew J. Bruccoli's biography, Cozzens in some respects makes John O'Hara seem like a shirt sleeve, man-of-the-people kinda fellow. He scorned the Pulitzer as an award given by "third-rate journalists."

Yes, whenever you want to present wild, passionate, abandoned love on-screen, Efrem Zimbalist is the go-to guy.
