I Was Going to Read This Article, but I Couldn't Concentrate Long Enough

Writer urges Internet junkies to 'switch off' and think: "Every new technology in history -- like the map and the clock -- changed the way people think but Carr sees special dangers in the Internet."

Hey, it's not just the internet. Every day I walk around and see people - mostly younger but even some geezers like me - staring into those Crackberry and iPhones to make sure they haven't missed an important incoming text about what their friend heard on TwItter or who was drunk last night. Sometimes I feel like we're the only ones not doing this.

We went to see the powerful revival of THE NORMAL HEART yesterday afternoon and the woman seated next to Jackie was unable to control herself from checking for messages several times, including about five minutes before the show ended.

I feel like Brian Wilson: "I guess I just wasn't made for these times."

*goes to warm up the geezer bus*

The main trick is to have a room/time that you walk away from all tech. My friends/kids sometimes get onto me because I don't carry my phone around the house. I leave it in the office. Especially on Tuesday nights when NCIS is on.

You have to schedule in tech breaks. And that's one of the reasons I love the Kindle. I can read but I can't surf the net on it.
