Family friend Stan Rosenfield says Bacon died in his sleep of congestive heart failure Saturday at his Northridge home.
As a reporter for the AP and later as columnist for the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, Bacon had a knack for befriending A-list celebrities. He palled around with John Wayne, shared whisky with Frank Sinatra, was a confidant of Marilyn Monroe and met eight U.S. presidents."

What do I remember about James Bacon? First, his appearance (as himself, the gossip columnist) in the classic College Confidential. Who could forget "Tabasco Films"?
Second, in his Hollywood is a Four Letter Town he used his long experience to discuss one of the key questions of our time: who had (at that time) the biggest dick in Hollywood?
(SPOILER ALERT: he said it was a tie between Milton Berle and Forrest Tucker.)
RIP, big guy.
Jeff
