I read my first--and, I think, last--Carter Brown crime novel (THE WAYWARD WAHINE) when I was maybe seven. I really didn't have any idea what the hell was going on, except that dead guys kept falling out of closets with their throats cut, but it did stick in my memory. And all those McGinnis covers--a mother lode of illustrative treasure.
