Certainly isn't typecasting. He's a good actor, hopefully he can get the essence of the character.

Yikes.
He seems a bit young for the role, but I realize that the older I get, the older I visualize the characters as I'm reading.
NO. NO. Again, no. Does he look like a former football tight end to you? He has been good/adequate in some things, but this is just wrong. I hope it never gets made.
I'm squarely in the "Yikes" camp. Even when I think he's done a good job, his movies are filled with scenes where you "see" the acting. This makes me sad.
Yes, he's a good actor, but he hasn't got the build or the gravitas. I think Russell Crowe would make a good Travis...

As much as I love Travis McGee, I wonder how well he will translate for today's movie audience.
The only good that could possibly come from this is a DVD release tie-in of Rod Taylor's turn as McGee in "Darker Than Amber"
I can see him leaning off the bow of The Busted Flush yelling, "I'm king of the marina."

I think they'll change the story details (and relationships and personalities) to fit it into the current era. The movie-going audience won't mind since they aren't likely to be fans of the source material.
I'm okay with the idea - If it gets made and released, I think it'll bring the McGee books back into print for another generation to discover.
