The Comeback

Drive-in theaters still popular after 75 years - CNN.com: "The drive-in theater, that uniquely American institution which turned 75 this summer, is experiencing an unexpected renaissance. After decades of closures, about 100 drive-ins have opened or reopened since the mid-'90s."

I haven't seen any drive-in theatres yet, although I'd like to (there aren't any here in our country). It is also true that I prefer video films than going in a movie.

They were once hugely popular here. Now, not so much, but it's nice to see them returning to the scene.

The only one in Tacoma is a swap meet nowadays. The first time I went to a drive in in the Northwest it rained. They rented windshield canopies, but I didn't get one. Big mistake. The switch from those cheap speakers to hearing the movie on a low-numbered AM radio station was another step down in the experience. I'm not sure I'd attend a drive in movie today, although I look back on them from my youth with fondness.

I think the last drive-in double-feature that I saw was in 1979, a combo of VAN NUYS BOULEVARD (with Cyndy Wood, PMOY 1974) and H.O.T.S. (with Susan Kiger, PMOM January 1977, and Pamela Jean Bryant, PMOM, April 1978)-- at the old Lee Highway Drive-In, torn down five years thereafter to make way for the Lee Highway Multiplex.

My little town(Eden, NC) has a drive-in open on weekends only and closed during the winter. With the recent closing of our theater cineplex, that's all we have now. And in the entire county, there's only one one screen theater. a left over from the forties/fifties.
Sad, huh.
