I've Been Kindled

I got an e-mail yesterday from someone who told me he was reading A Mammoth Murder in a Kindle edition. I didn't even know it was available that way.

Shouldn't you be getting some sort of royalty from that?

Yes, and I can hardly wait for the next reporting period, after which I'll probably be blogging from Monte Carlo.

I've read pretty good reviews of the Kindle, but I still like sitting down with the smell of fresh print in my hands (or old paper for that matter).

Yeah, I'm an old-fashioned kind of guy, myself. A book can't be beat.

Does this mean your books make good kindling? The mind boggles.

I'm the guy that sent Bill the email. I'm an old-school reader myself; 4,000 books in a dedicated room in my house. A collection I've been working on for 55+ years. I really, really like the Kindle. No out-of-print problems, no old yellow paper that causes me to start wheezing, etc. After the initial half hour of acclimation, I now find I loose myself in the reading process just as quickly as with a hard-copy book.

I hear the second-generation Kindle will be along this fall. May have to try it out.

Bill, that's a rumor that started on one unreliable web site and spread like wildfire. I would completely discount it. Amazon's statements seem to indicate another year or two before a new version of the hardware. Software changes will likely be made, and can be pushed to the device via the wireless connection.

In my opinion (after much research), a second-generation device in the fall is extremely unlikely.

Thanks, Mike. I don't even remember where I heard the rumor.
