EQMM, Sept/Oct 2008

Got the new issue in the mail yesterday. The Ed Hoch story is another reprint (first U. S. publication, though), and next month will see the last story that Ed worked on for the magazine, completed by Jon Breen. Talk about the end of an era! Loren Estleman has a very funny Nero Wolfe pastiche, and Tom Piccirilli has a fine hardboiled story. I've made some brief comments on both at Nasty, Brutish, and Short. Lots of other good stories, too, as always.

I read somewhere that Hoch would begin and end a short within two weeks. When I look at the quality of his output, I'm in awe. Simon Ark and Nick Velvet are my favorites of his characters. I'm hoping someone will repackage these stories in book form.

I'm in awe, too. Nick Velvet is my favorite.

Hey, Bill, the scan at the moment puts your mailing address out there...is that a concern?

Some of the Arks were collected...or so I think I remember...but the Velvets and Leopolds haven't yet? Paging C&L, among others...

It always puzzles me how they choose which names to go on the EQMM covers. Even more than AHMM.

Probably the address isn't a concern, Todd. I'm sure anybody can find it in about two seconds with a google search.

The Piccirilli story is terrific. It's hardboiled, clever, and fun. Not to mention it has Piccirilli's usual dark sentiment and haunting atmosphere. Really cool.

I agree, Ben.

I agree too. Just finished Piccirilli's *The Midnight Road* and have another from him coming up on the reading list: a Hellboy novel! Surprised me when I saw it --but I expect it to be fine.
