Pat Boone and Connie Francis Still Shut Out

Thanks to Jeff Meyerson for the link.

iWon News - Madonna, Mellencamp Newest to Rock Hall: "CLEVELAND (AP) - The Material Girl is about to become a Hall of Famer.

The ever-evolving Madonna was announced as a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee on Thursday along with John Mellencamp, The Ventures, Leonard Cohen and The Dave Clark Five.

A panel of 600 industry figures selected the five acts to be inducted at the annual ceremony, to be held March 10 in New York.

'The 2008 inductees are trailblazers - all unique and influential in their genres,' Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation President and CEO Joel Peresman said in a statement. 'From poetry to pop, these five acts demonstrate the rich diversity of rock and roll itself.'"

Exactly how has Ms. Ciccone "evolved"? And has she had any other good songs aside from the mildly good, for her unusually heartfelt, "Like a Prayer"? And aside from Francis, who would you nominate, Bill?

I'm not kidding about Pat Boone. He might not have been a rocker, but he was a huge part of rock and roll in the '50s.

Unfairly, his cover-heavy early career in the Jim Crow days of radio mark him as Collaborator...I leave it to others to judge his artistic achievement. But if Ciccone's in...or the well-intentioned but dull Mellencamp...I haven't checked yet, wonder if Gil Scott-Heron has been inducted, given his work in fusion and rap and related modes.

The Venture and Dave Clark Five deserve it, the others don't. Leonard Cohen? C'mon. Madonna? Semi-Talented slut. Mellencamp? Mid-tier performer. At this rate The Fabulous G-Strings and The Moops will be inducted.

Ventures. There was more than one. The Ventures.

Coheh's more influential than popular. I can see it. Buffy Sainte Marie's recording of his poem, to her music, "God is Alive, Magid is Afoot" might've made him worth looking at for this by itself...wonder is she's in...

Incidentally to the Cap'n's post today is Dave Clark's birthday.

I've had Dave Clark on the mind for ever since seeing his name in the newspaper's daily celebrity birthdays list.
