Variety.com - Keanu Reeves lands on 'Earth': "Twentieth Century Fox has set Keanu Reeves to star in 'The Day the Earth Stood Still,' its re-imagining of the 1951 Robert Wise-directed sci-fi classic.
Reeves committed over the weekend to play Klaatu, a humanoid alien who arrives on Earth accompanied by an indestructible, heavily armed robot and a warning to world leaders that their continued aggression will lead to annihilation by species watching from afar.
Erwin Stoff is producing, with Scott Derrickson ('The Exorcism of Emily Rose') directing from a script by David Scarpa. Reeves' commitment puts the picture on track for a late fall or early 2008 production start. Studio sees it as a tentpole.
The Klaatu role was originated by Michael Rennie. The 1951 film's premise, a response to the rise of the Cold War after WWII, is being updated, and the film will use advances in visual effects."

I think he'd be better suited to play the robot but at least Hollywood's recognized he can't play a strictly human character.
If the robot were made of wood, Keanu would be great. What worries me is the "re-imagining."
Well, let's see: the earth will be standing still; and Keanu Reeves will be standing still. I smell a real problem with this movie. Nothing will be happening on any front. If Keanu Reeves is supposed to be, ya know, "solving the problems" in the movie, how will we spot him doing it? Where exactly on the screen will we look for that? In his other movies we simply had to look for the most inert, devitalized object, and that would be Keanu Reeves and then we were set. In this move, if the entire Earth is "standing still" the audience will be lost. They will be disoriented and confused. Everyone in the theater will be talking to everyone else. "What part of the screen do we look at??!! Nothing is moving anywhere!!!" Panic could ensue. Bedlam would erupt. I actually am sitting on the couch with my face in my hands in despair already. On the plus side the Jay Leno monologues will be real easy to write for a while.
Great comment, and all too true.
I hear they are retitling it "The Day My Face Stood Still."
I don't usually hate on Keanu too bad, but that one just wrote itself.
"Take me to your leader...dude."
They'd be fools not to use that line.
"_Totally_ barata nikto"?
Actually, Reeves, when given something to do, is actually rather good...see RIVER'S EDGE and even the poorly-scripted THE GIFT. It's just when we are mostly supposed to admire his aspect that he tends to become animatronic.
Totally.
Well it has to be better than casting Nicholas Cage as Thomas Magnum in a film version of Magnum PI. Doesn't it?
Arrggghhhhh! I read that Cage was "considering" the role. I hope he has enough sense to turn it down.
A check of the calendar and...no, it's not April 1st. Maybe somebody talked him into it, by virtue of Keanu and Klaatu sounding similar to him after he took that spill off his motorcycle?
