Irrational Numbers Wall Clock

Irrational Numbers Wall Clock

In math, irrational numbers are those that can't be represented by simple fractions. Two examples are pi and the square root of 2. Designed by a mathematician, for mathematicians (and others in the know, like engineers and scientists), this clock tells time in irrational numbers logically placed on a 360-degree circle. For example, pi (3.14159…) is just a few degrees past where the 3 would be on a regular clock face. Black with white markings and hands, metal clock runs on 1 AA battery. 12" diameter.

Amazon.com: When Old Men Die (Truman Smith Mysteries) eBook: Bill Crider: Kindle Store: Truman "Tru" Smith is a PI who'd rather be reading Faulkner or fishing on his beloved Galveston Island than solving mysteries, so when his friend Dino asks for help, Tru at first demurs. With some not-very-subtle arm twisting, Dino finally persuades Tru to investigate the disappearance of Old Harry, a homeless vagrant whom Dino and his family have "adopted." Tru makes some half-hearted efforts to find the old geezer--who Tru figures probably disappeared because he felt like it--but only succeeds in getting shot at, doused in the Gulf, and bopped on the head. Of course, these events not only make Tru cross, they also rouse his suspicions about why somebody is so determined to keep him from finding out the real reasons for Old Harry's disappearance. It's not long before Tru discovers that some very nasty business is going on--business that isn't in the best interests of Tru's island.

Headstone --Ken Bruen

When last we visited with Jack Taylor, he'd just finished dealing with the Devil (though I suppose Jack will never be really finished with that). That novel must have struck a chord with the marketing department, since this one is billed as "A Jack Taylor Novel of Terror." I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, since this one follows right along with the previous ones. Terrible things happen, of course, as they do in every book about Taylor. Each time I read one, I think that there's nothing more that can be taken away from Taylor. And each time I read a new one, I find that there's always something. In this book, there's a lot.

There's really no need for a summary of the plot. I'll just say that it involves priests, cops, a group called Headstone that goes in for torture and murder, some old friend and an old antagonist, along with many of the usual cast. Mix in plenty of violence, drugs, and Jameson; Bruen's poetic way of telling a tale; Taylor's ruminations on literature, the state of Ireland and humanity; and a breakneck pace. The result is irresistible to me, and apparently to lots of others. Not for reading on a day when you're feeling a bit down, however. You might not get back up.

PW's Film Critics List Their Top 50 Films | Screen Cover Story | Screen | Philadelphia Weekly: While “Best of” lists can be useful, fun keepsakes, “Best of Film” lists are usually boring and repetitive. There are hundreds of places where you can read about the brilliance of Citizen Kane. And while we agree that the movie is indeed brilliant and one of cinema’s finest, we won’t be regurgitating the same ol’ list of critics’ picks here. Compiled below is a highly subjective list of films that we, the film critics at PW, feel are best. These films are personal favorites that we think are important, great motion pictures.

Forgotten Books: D'Shai -- Joel Rosenberg

Canadian writers? Well, I'll just cheat a little. Joel Rosenberg was, after all, born in Canada (Winnipeg, to be precise), so he should count, even if he grew up in the U. S., right?

I read a lot of Rosenberg's books, and I enjoyed them all. D'Shai is the first of two fantasy/mystery novels set in the world of D'Shai, a remarkably detailed place with a lot of Asian flavor, filled with magic. Some people there can raise kazuh, a power which enables them perform spectacularly well in one of the 52 vocations. Kami Khuzud, born into a family of acrobats, can't raise kazuh, which makes him a typical fantasy hero, the one who doesn't quite live up to expectations but who feels destined for better things. Add to that the fact that he's in love with a woman above his station, and you have a pretty familiar setup.

But Rosenberg's book is anything but typical. There's an emotionally involving murder, and Kami sets out to solve it. In doing so, he raises kazuh and discovers that he has a vocation heretofore unknown. He's a Truth Seeker, or to put it another way, a Great Detective.

I really liked this book and its sequel, The Hour of the Octopus. If you want to read a mystery that's really different, you can do a lot worse than these two.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, has officially been an annual tradition in the United States since 1863, when during the Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of thanksgiving to be celebrated on Thursday, November 26.[1] As a federal and popular holiday in the U.S., Thanksgiving is one of the "big six" major holidays of the year (along with Christmas, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day). Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season.

All of the stories are based on real cases of the 1930s and '40s, meticulously researched by award-winning writer and Road to Perdition creator Max Allan Collins. Heller's adventures feature some of the biggest names in twentieth-century American crime history: Eliot Ness, Frank Nitti, Mickey Cohen, and Jack Ruby, just to name a few. Whether he is investigating a union shooting, going toe-to-toe with the female leader of a vicious hold-up crew, or playing a homeless man to pose as bait for an insurance racket, Heller's humorous, wryly cynical tone, and knack for keen social observation make for a cracking good read.

On the Road Again

Judy and I are off to Austin, where we'll be spending a couple of days. We'll have Thanksgiving dinner at our son's house, and we'll be joined by our daughter and her husband. I probably won't be answering e-mail or making comments on the blog until I get back home, however. I also won't be going to any Black Friday sales. I like to leave that to other people.
