I guess we will never know what happened. It might have been an accident or it might have been foul play. The original investigation was mishandled and now it's too late to figure out what occurred.
I'm guessing only Robert Wagner knows what happened...and he'll never tell.
I still mourn that. I had a heck of a crush on Natalie Wood. She was as beautiful as ever in Brainstorm!
