Met Judge Reinhold and his kind and beautiful wife Amy - and he told me that the book was in galley form when they were working on the A. Heckerling film... and the story had two characters that were Spicolli-like but they ended up as the single character in the film.
Cameron Crowe, incidentally, attended a high school and pretended to be a student at about age 19 and only the principal of the school agreed and was in on this event; this led to the story and the script. HEART member Nancy Wilson (married for a good number of years to screenwriter/filmmaker Crowe) "really loved Cameron Crowe, she really did like him" those years ago.
Nancy Wilson has a cameo in the scene in the car, right next to the Reinhold is in when he has the "pirate hat" and tosses a delivery cartoon of food from the window!

Hey, Bud. Let's party!
Phoebe Cates.
I've lost track of the number of times I've watched 40 seconds of that movie.
Ah, Phoebe, Phoebe...
*sigh*
