I've always shelved by subject matter, and (with fiction), within that by author (with each author's books shelved chronologically). History is by subject matter, then pretty much randomly. Poetry and SF, in their own categories, but sorted as within fiction.
Then there are the random piles and to-be-read-heaps...

You mean tossing the books into tottering piles and cramming them into every available nook and cranny is NOT a good way to organize my books? Alas!
Most of mine are alphabetical, then chronological within each author's books.
My parents once had a friend who only borrowed red books from the library, don't ask me why.
