ABC News: Actor John Heard, whose many roles included the father in the "Home Alone" series and a corrupt detective in "The Sopranos," has died. He was 71. Hat tip to Jeff Meyerson.
I saw this, and a lot of the reports said he was best known for his role in the "Home Alone" movies. I hope that's not accurate. (But a review of his acting credits--179 of them, over a 42 year period--suggests that, yeah, maybe he is best known for the "Hone Alone" movies.)
His finest hour was as the one-legged, one-eyed bitter Viet Nam War vet, Cutter, in the amazing film "Cutter's Way"; based on the novel "Cutter And Bone". Jeff Bridges played Bone. Highly recommended. But not available on Amazon in U.S. format. (Rick Libott)
"Cutter's Way"...yeah. First place I saw him, with Jeff Bridges and Lisa Eichhorn, and he was truly memorable. Also admired him in Paul Schrader's "Cat People." He did everything he did very well; he will be missed.
He was good in "Cutter's Way", but I best remember his early role in a now forgotten gem "Between the Lines" and his smaller role in "The Milagro Beanfield War". From his early work, the critic John Simon thought he would be a star and so did I. He never made that, but he did a lot of good solid acting work.

Well, easy come, easy go.
No, I didn't really do that, but I do have to keep up my reputation.
Loved him in Cutter's Way. It shows up on cable a lot.

And who could forget his tortured Reverend against Meg Foster's Hester in PBS' "Scarlet Letter?"
