NY Daily News: Legendary Sports Illustrated scribe Frank Deford who won over a legion of fans with witty writing and colorful commentary and launched the nation’s only daily sports newspaper died Sunday. He was 78. Hat tip to Jeff Meyerson.
During the years I was a subscriber to Sports Illustrated I never missed his articles and commentary, often reading those items first. A truly great sports writer, and by all accounts a fine man.
I was coming here to mention the book about Deford's daughter--but I see Jeff beat me to it, as usual. I used to listen to Deford on NPR and I remember when Bob Edwards interviewed him about that book...I don't know how either of them made it through the interview without crying--I know I was.

Remember reading his book on the Miss America pageant years ago.
Big fan of his written as well as his television work. This sucks.
I read his book about his young daughter dying of cystic fibrosis. Very moving.

I used to see him on TV years ago and always enjoyed his comments.
Always enjoyed hearing him on NPR

I believe there was a TV movie adaptation of the book.
