Researchers estimate that by this age, we’ve become less open-minded, and our neural circuits become almost fully structured based around our experiences, leaving little wiggle room for new associations.

There's a reason I'm known as Disco Dolly Deb.
I think she's off about a decade for people who grew up in the Fifties. Also, she's referring to popular music. I didn't get into jazz until I was 20 or so, and classical in my later 20s. Also, what "song I heard at the 8th grade dance. There was no 8th grade dance in my day.
I guess that explains my preference for the early '60s.
In my case the 'science' needs recalibrating8-) The first music I remember was when I was ~5 in a small town in far West Texas and heard the Chicago Symphony Orchestra bouncing off the ionosphere into our AM radio playing Prokofiev's Classical Symphony and have been a 'classical' fan ever since. I've come to enjoy most music types, but no music since has been as enjoyable to me.
