Rex Stout (as probably everyone reading this blog knows) wrote an entire book devoted to tarnishing the image of the FBI, 1965's The Doorbell Rang. [The book was Stout's reaction to Fred Cook's The FBI Nobody Knows(1964); I think this is a link to the whole book:]
