Kinda reminds me of the theory of an old friend regarding musical acts and why their first albums always tend to be better than second albums: they've had years to develop the songs, the sounds, the show; then they hit the big time and have to hustle to produce subsequent work. Otoh, for every artist who fulfills this theory, there are plenty who don't hit their stride for decades.

I suppose Catcher in the Rye would qualify...as it is Salinger's only novel.
And, with living and still active authors (e.g., Donna Tartt), it may be too early to tell.

Of the ten, I was only aware of six of them, but my taste has always ran towards Mark Twain. LOL
