Richard Schickel, R. I. P.

Variety: Richard Schickel, the longtime film critic for Time magazine who also wrote 37 books, mostly on film, and directed a number of documentaries on film subjects, died on Saturday in Los Angeles of complications from a series of strokes, his family told the Los Angeles Times. He was 84.

I believe that it was Schickel, back when he was also writing TV reviews, who identified "the curse of the Cartwrights" (about the TV show Bonanza, for those too young to remember). Whenever one of the Cartwrights developed an attachment to a woman, she would almost immediately die. His column on the syndrome was really, really funny. (And if it wasn't his column, it was still really funny.) (Google was no help; I know I read the column while Bonanza was still on the air, though.)
