Jim Harrison, R. I. P.

‘Legends of the Fall’ author Jim Harrison dead at 78: Jim Harrison, considered one of the great writers in contemporary American fiction and author of the novella Legends of the Fall, has died at age 78 at his home in Patagonia, Arizona.

Man, that's sad news. I've been reading his poetry for maybe 30, 35 years (I don't care that much for his fiction). I know he's been in ill health for a long time...but, damn...This from 2008, but it's sort of appropriate:

BARKING DOG

The moon comes up.
The moon goes down.
This is to inform you
that I didn’t die young.
Age swept past me
but I caught up.
Spring has begun here and each day
brings new birds up from Mexico.
Yesterday I got a call from the outside
world but I said no in thunder.
I was a dog on a short chain
and now there’s no chain.
