The tragedy of that era's porn...everyone's getting laid, but no one enjoys it much. Come to think of it, in various ways, that's too often the tragedy of too much porn from most eras...but even more frequently midcentury...and I suspect appeasing censors wasn't the whole reason for that...
Oh, I do apply it above. The audience is the audience in part through lack of their own sexual adventure or satisfaction, or at least insufficiency at least some of the time...stroking that audience often will involve a bit of Schadenfreude...but the guilt built in in that era is more acute than in surviving examples I've...um, not come across, exactly...encountered from other times. Joyless sexual lives perhaps do call for joyless porn.
Repressed eras are full of discontent and dissatisfaction, as well...it's just the evidence is burnt, the plaintiffs Put Away...including under the dirt...

Todd, I think your comment could apply today too. Discontent and dissatisfaction seem to be hallmarks of "permissive" eras.

I love beading the back cover copy on these. In a lot of cases, it's probably better than the book.
