4 Reasons the Spoiler Alert Is Going Away Forever

If I'm writing an FFB or making a comment involving a major plot point or twist, I always include a SPOILER ALERT. It does beg the question, though, when has something aged out of spoiler alert territory. I would never want to spoil VERTIGO or A KISS BEFORE DYING for anyone, but I've read comments where people were angry that someone "revealed" that Elizabeth marries Mr. Darcy at the end of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. I think that's a spoiler alert too far.

She did? Now you ruined it for me!

;)

I see a lot of complaints about people "ruining" ANNA KARENINA too.

"Spoiler, I married him!"

All happy novels end the same...

How many people would have seen Old Yeller if they had known the ending ahead of time? I sure wouldn't have!

My problem is not so much with Spoilers per se as that(perhaps as a result of too much film scholarship) I hardly ever see a movie anymore , old or new, without knowing a lot about it beforehand. I think back on being totally knocked down by VERTIGO, OUT OF THE PAST, NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and so many others (because I knew nothing about them before watching) and mourn my lost ignorance.

I know the feeling, Dan. I think the last movie I saw without knowing a lot in advance (it hadn't screened for critics) was FIFTY-TWO PICKUP. It was a nice surprise, but that was a long time ago.

Richard--I knew the ending to Old Yeller before I saw it, but it got to me anyway.
