Best part of the article: these bubblegum acts are appearing at...the B. B. King Blues Club!

Great article. I agree, Deb, that is mind blowing as we old hippies used to say. But if you wever go by BB's on a weekend you'll see plenty of Midwestern tourists looking lost.

Most of those songs made it big because they were incredibly infectious. Like them or not, they got in your brain and stayed there...like a fungus. "Yummy Yummy Yummy" is probably the one I am most likely to listen to, as I have it on a 'sixties collection, but "Sugar, Sugar" was ubiquitous and by far the biggest hit. They made excellent use of it in an episode of HBO's FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON series.

I confess to loving bubblegum music. I have a whole bubblegum playlist that I listen to now and then.

Also, re Deb's remark. BB King's runs a lot of shows during the week and there are only so many "real" people out there. They have quite a few "tribute band" shows as well. I've always wanted to go to their Sunday gospel brunch which draws big crowds.

I know, I mean I've seen acts at the HARD ROCK CAFE and HOUSE OF BLUES that made the Cowsills look like Megadeth (slight exaggeration, but you get my point), it just seems so incongruous--B.B. King and Bubblegum--that it made me laugh.

/Sugar, Sugar is the greatest bubblegum song ever! Wilson Pickett even did a version.

I guess I never thought about the term "bubblegum" vis a vis pop music...but I can see the songs mentioned as being such. Guess I never thought much about whether a group was or wasn't, so The Monkees are considered such? I still like "I'm A Believer".

And, yes, I remember "Sugar, Sugar" but (apparently mercifully) have forgotten "Yummy Yummy".

Yummy, yummy, yummy,
I got love in my tummy
And I feel like a-lovin' you.
Love, you're such a sweet thing, good enough to eat thing
And it's just a-what I'm gonna do

I was never that big of fan of bubble gum, and the music doesn't do it for me,either.
