The thing about H. H. Holmes that is most fascinating is that he seems like he stepped out of a Gothic novel. If I had encountered Holmes in a novel without ever hearing about him, I'd have thought he was an invention of the author.
H.H. Holmes was also the penname that Anthony Boucher used to review mystery novels. (Anthony Boucher was a pen name too, but I forget his real name.)

Anthony Boucher = William Anthony White
Ah, that's it.
