Hm. And, of course, the various sf and fantasy writers merely pepper their Truly non-fantasticated work with such Elements. You know, unlike all those stories where everything is wall-to-wall sigh-fie stuff, like everyone wears space helmets and uses blasters all the time. Dude.

I read a Nick Hornby novel once.
I've read A Heartbreaking Work and High Fidelity. Liked them both. Can't say many of the others on the list appeal to me.
